About
What's in a name, Compass Rose Studio?
A compass rose has been illustrated on maps, oceanic charts, and historic atlases since as early as 1200AD to display direction (N, NE, S, SE, W, etc...).
Amy's passion for art, the sea, and vintage maps led to her inspiration for Compass Rose Studio. The word compass is based on the Latin word 'com' (together) and 'passus' (a step or pace). The 'rose' is derived from the elaborate and ornate petal designs illustrated on early compasses. Together, Compass and Rose is quite beautiful.
About Amy Mac
Hi, I’m Amy, the artist behind Compass Rose Studio. I create in every medium that will have me - watercolor, acrylic, cyanotype, digital, mixed media, sculpture. My work is rooted in creating small imagined worlds: places I’d love to wander into, linger in, and share with anyone who feels drawn to them.
Forests, underwater realms, and the vast quiet of space inspire me. I’m fascinated by the way these environments hold mystery and comfort at the same time. Through layers of color, texture, and form, I try to capture that feeling of discovering something both strange and familiar - a doorway into a reality just slightly shifted from our own.
I create to explore, and I hope my work invites you to explore along with me.
